In the context of Indian law, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) does not have specific sections that explicitly address "mental torture." However, various sections can be applied to cases of mental cruelty or torture, depending on the circumstances. Here are the relevant sections for each of the mentioned scenarios:

  1. Mental Torture in Marriage (Husband/Wife to Spouse):

    • Section 498A IPC: Deals with cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman.
    • Section 306 of IPC: Deals with the abetment of suicide, which can apply if extreme mental torture leads to suicide.

  2. Mental Torture in Family (Parents to Child):

    • Section 319 IPC: Deals with causing hurt to a child, which can include mental torture.

  3. Student-Teacher Torture:

    • Section 323 IPC: Deals with voluntarily causing hurt.
    • Section 506 IPC: Deals with criminal intimidation.

  4. Police Torture on the Public:

    • Section 330 IPC: Deals with causing hurt to extort a confession or information.
    • Section 348 IPC: Deals with wrongful confinement to extort confession or compel restoration of property.

  5. Politician Torture on the Public:

    • Politicians, when involved in unlawful activities or abuse of power, may be charged under various sections depending on the nature of their actions. These can include corruption charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, or other relevant laws.

Journalists play a vital role in raising awareness about such issues and advocating for justice and societal change. It's important to ensure accurate reporting and protect the privacy and dignity of the individuals involved.
